Living and working in Valle de Santiago

Valle de Santiago, a municipality in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico, was established in 1607 and today is home to over 70,000 inhabitants. The city of Valle de Santiago lies at an elevation of 1,744 meters and is only 90 kilometers south of the capital city of Guanajuato. Because of the region’s rich silver deposits, it was one of the first areas colonized by the Spanish in 1520, and even today the silver mines of Guanajuato remain among the most productive in the world. The city of Guanajuato itself, with its charming colonial architecture and winding streets, quickly became a World Heritage Site in 1988. Its university, originally established by Jesuit priests in the 18th century, is known for its Neoclassical architecture. In addition, there are countless churches from colonial times, including the impressive Cathedral on the Plaza de la Paz. Guanajuato is also well-known for its Mummy Museum, which houses an astounding collection of naturally mummified bodies that were buried during an outbreak of Cholera in 1833. The mummies were discovered in the neighboring municipal cemetery in Guanajuato, and the location was later turned into the museum, housing today approximately 119 specimens. One of the year’s highlights is the three-week Festival Internacional Cervantino, which was established in 1972 and is held annually every October. More than 2000 artists in the fields of theater, opera, music, and dance from all over the world perform at this festival.
